Overview
This project focused on strengthening and expanding Paxful’s peer-to-peer Bitcoin trading platform by introducing new functionality, optimizing existing features, and addressing technical debt to ensure long-term stability. A key milestone was the development of the Paxful Android application, designed to mirror the essential capabilities of the web platform while adapting them for mobile-first use.
The app enables users to securely buy and sell Bitcoin on the go, simplifies the trading process, and improves accessibility for a wider audience. By delivering a seamless and user-friendly mobile experience, the initiative aimed to increase engagement, boost customer satisfaction, and extend the platform’s reach.
Problem
In Nigeria, where mobile adoption is high but access to traditional banking remains limited, the Android app serves as a gateway to financial inclusion. It empowers individuals to participate in the digital economy, manage digital assets more easily, and access new opportunities for saving, investing, and sending money globally.
Despite rapid growth in digital finance, millions of Nigerians remain excluded from the formal banking system. Limited access to traditional financial services makes it difficult for people to save, invest, or transfer money across borders affordably. At the same time, Nigeria has one of the highest rates of mobile adoption in Africa, creating strong demand for secure and accessible digital solutions.
While Paxful’s web platform offers a wide range of payment methods and trading options, it is not always optimized for mobile-first users. Complex workflows, heavy reliance on desktop interfaces, and inconsistent connectivity create barriers for those who primarily access the internet through smartphones.
Additionally, trust and security remain critical challenges in peer-to-peer trading. Users need confidence in transaction safety, transparent reputation systems, and reliable tools to protect against fraud. Without a streamlined, mobile-friendly solution, Paxful risks losing potential users who require simplicity, accessibility, and security in their financial transactions.
Solution
As a Product Designer, I started from research and analytics to understand user needs, market conditions, and the unique challenges of peer-to-peer trading in Nigeria. I focused on identifying pain points in the existing web experience, including complex trade flows and limited mobile usability.
I optimized the trading process by designing clear, intuitive flows that make buying and selling Bitcoin faster and easier. I created a mobile-first experience that integrates popular Nigerian payment methods, adapts seamlessly to varying connectivity levels, and incorporates built-in security features such as escrow and reputation systems to build user trust.
In collaboration with developers and stakeholders, I ensured the Android app replicated the core functionality of the Paxful web platform while rethinking the mobile interface. Together, we delivered a solution that empowers Nigerians to access financial services, manage digital assets, and participate in the global economy directly from their smartphones.
